Melanoma Munchkins

I had 16 stitches on the bottom of my foot to remove melanoma, but the bandaging looked just like I had sprained my ankle. On crutches, at a raucous party, two nights after the surgery, a bunch of people were making jokes about how accident prone I am (which I totally am). I didn’t feel like being a downer, so I just played along. A few minutes later my brother stepped over to see what was so funny. One person asked, “So really, what did you do to yourself?” My brother answered for me, “Cancer,” but everyone thought he was joking so they just laughed harder. When he didn’t laugh it was the most awkward moment of the night, but I was laughing!!  (Anna, Feb 2012)
